With the first snow flakes falling down, Christmas seems to get nearer very quickly.  And just like every year I miss the atmosphere around "Sinterklaas" Santa Claus on December 5), "Kerst" (Christmas) and "Nieuwjaar".  The handmade decorations, the huge variety of arts and crafts material, the culinary specialities, the preparation for the fireworks on New Year's eve.....

I must admit that, when we travel to Holland, I have a big shopping list of things that you
just cannot (or very seldom and expensive) purchase in the Creuse.


 

The British "immigrants" are lucky: not only they buy a lot of things when they return to the UK, but a lot of the British brands are sold in specialised shops in the area and  the regular French supermarkets have a minimum of English food available. 

I am not convinced that English (or Dutch!) plaster, paint, animal food, dog education, hairdressing or wines are better than the French ones, but given the number of ads in the English free newspapers*, it seems to be a good business..  and I would be delighted to find some of my Dutch favourites in France!

Avec les premiers flocons de neige, Noël aplus l'air de s'approcher à grands pas.  Et comme tous les ans, l'ambiance autour de "Sinterklaas" (Saint Nicolas le 5 décembre), "Kerst" (Noël) et "Nieuwjaar" me manque. Les décorations faites maison, le grand choix de matière première pour la fabrication de celles-ci, les spécialités culinaires, les préparations des feux d'artifice du jour de l'an...

J'avoue que quand  on va aux Pays Bas, je fais une longue liste d'articles néerlandais qui ne sont pas en vente (ou très peu et hors de prix) dans la Creuse.

Les "immigrants" britanniques ont plus de chance: non seulement ils font le plein quand ils séjournent en Grande Bretagne, mais ils peuvent acheter leurs marques préférées dans des magasins spécialisés de la région ou dans les supermarchés français qui ont un minimum de leurs spécialités en rayon. 

Je ne suis pas convaincue que le plâtre, la peinture, la nourriture pour animaux, l'éducation des chiens, les coiffures ou les vins anglais (ou néerlandais) soient meilleurs que les français, mais vu le nombre proposés par les annonces dans les journaux gratuits en anglais*, ça doit bien marcher... et je serais vraiment ravie de trouver moi aussi mes articles néerlandais préférées en France !
